About
Hello
My name is Sophie grindlay, and I’m A textile artist based BETWEEN GLASGOW & PETERBOROUGH, uk.
I specialise in screen and sublimation printing, embroidery, hand painted textiles and collaged paintings.
My cross disciplinary practice allows me to express stories in colourful textural layers, communicating themes of domesticity, acts of care, folklore, belonging, and socio-political issues.
I’m a second generational Irish Immigrant who grew up in a UK Ken Loach style of town. Observing and also experiencing complex social and political issues has given me a keen interest in people, our stories, myths and folklore and societal concerns that impact us. These social narratives can take the form of acrylic paint on faux suede, adorned with a patchwork of red glass beads, where yarn and fine cotton thread become a drawing tool. Or chewing gum embroidery set on lace curtains and a ‘greasy spoon’ tablecloth raving beside a chair adorned with nails. My overtly obsessive penchant for texture and colour, and a curiosity for pattern has fuelled my passion to create.
Navigating my creative practice responsibly is also extremely important to me and I tend to repurpose garments and household textiles with a nod to my Irish heritage where this re-use was out of necessity. My respect of textiles has grown from my background as a Birth Educator and Doula, additionally from my own experience of Motherhood. I am intrigued how fabrics become tools in these worlds, a symbolic timeline of the human experience; from swaddling to shrouds.
